Why We Serve

When you look at the life of Jesus, one thing becomes clear: He came to serve. In Mark 10:45, Jesus says, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” If that was His purpose, how can we live any differently?
Service is one of the most basic—and most powerful—ways we live out our faith. It’s not about titles or recognition. It’s about humility, love, and the desire to reflect Jesus to the world around us. Whether you’re teaching a Bible class, cleaning the building, encouraging a teen, or visiting someone who’s hurting—you’re serving like Jesus did. Sometimes we get caught up in thinking service has to be something big or public. But the truth is, most of the time it’s the small, quiet acts of kindness that leave the biggest impact. A card. A prayer. A smile. A listening ear. These are the things that show people they’re seen, loved, and valued.
Our young people are watching. They’re learning what it looks like to be part of the church—not just by what we say, but by how we serve. When they see adults volunteering, jumping in to help, and looking out for others, it teaches them that church isn’t just a place we go, it’s a family we invest in.
Here’s my encouragement this week: find your place. If you’re already serving, thank you. If you haven’t jumped in yet—now’s the time. There’s a place for you here. Big or small, seen or unseen—your service matters. So, let’s be like Jesus. Let’s be people who serve!
And always remember—you are loved.
Eric
