Why Do We Pray?

One of the most basic, but most powerful, spiritual habits we can develop is prayer. It’s something we talk about often. We open and close our services with it. We teach our kids how to do it. But if we’re honest, many of us still struggle to truly understand why prayer matters and how vital it is to our daily walk with God.

In Luke 11, the disciples came to Jesus with a simple but profound request: “Lord, teach us to pray…” (Luke 11:1). They had seen Jesus perform miracles. They had watched Him teach with authority. But what they wanted to learn most from Him was how to talk to the Father.

Prayer is more than a spiritual routine, it’s a lifeline. It’s how we stay connected to the One who gives us strength, peace, guidance, and hope. Prayer keeps our hearts soft. It helps us fight temptation. It reminds us that we are not alone.

But prayer is also a relationship. God isn’t looking for perfectly worded speeches. He wants to hear from His children. When we pray, we’re not just making requests—we’re building a deeper connection with the One who loves us most.

As we continue to grow as individuals, as families, and as a church, let’s commit ourselves to being people of prayer. Let’s pray in the car, at the table, in the classroom, in our quiet moments, and in our storms. Let’s teach our children not just how to pray, but why we pray.

Because the more we talk to God—the more we learn to trust Him.
