Studying the Bible

For the month of June, our theme has been Bible study. One of my favorite things about studying the Bible is that no matter how many times you read it you learn something new. Even those of us that may be more familiar with scripture can still learn something every time we read it. I was recently studying for our Sunday morning teen class on the book of Hebrews when I noticed something that made me stop and think. The main theme of Hebrews is that Christ’s law is better than the Mosaic law. The Hebrew writer is trying to explain to his audience that Jesus was and is the ultimate sacrifice and that there is no longer a need for the old law. I have read Hebrews many times before but never really understood the connection between Christ and the High Priests of the Old Testament. The symmetry is simply amazing! Under the old law, once a year on the day of Atonement, the high priest would offer a sacrifice for his sins and then another for the sins of the people. Only the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies and only on this day. The sacrifice was to be perfect with no blemishes. God gave us not only the perfect sacrifice but the perfect person to offer that sacrifice. You see, Jesus was the spotless lamb that took away our sins, but there had to be a high priest to offer that sacrifice. Jesus was that high priest! He willingly gave us his life. No one took it from him. As our high priest, He approached the “Holy of Holies” for us and offered the ultimate sin offering, Himself. Isn’t it great that we have such a wonderful savior that He was willing to offer Himself for our sins! Let’s never forget that Christ was willing to give Himself for us. Have a great week and remember you are loved!
