Love Is A Decision

When most people think about love, they think about their feelings. The love Jesus calls us to is deeper than a feeling. Biblical love is a decision. It’s a choice we make because we belong to Christ.

Jesus said in John 13:34–35, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you… By this all will know that you are Mydisciples, if you have love for one another.” Notice that Jesus didn’t describe love as an idea or a mood, He gave it as a command. That means love is something we do on purpose.

Jesus didn’t just tell us to love, He modeled it. He loved when it was inconvenient. He loved when it cost Him something. He loved the overlooked, the broken, and even those who mistreated Him. His love wasn’t based on who deserved it, it showed from who He is. Christ’s love was that of compassion for others and sacrifice, culminating in the cross.

That’s where it gets personal for us. Our kids are learning what love looks like by watching us. They’re watching how we speak to our spouse, how we handle frustration, how we treat people who disagree with us, and how we respond when we’ve been wronged. Long before they can explain doctrine, they can tell whether the love of Christ is real in our home. When they see love that is patient, kind, steady, and forgiving, they’re seeing a picture, however imperfect, of Jesus.

And that kind of love doesn’t just shape our families. It impacts everyone around us. Focus on the last part of that passage in John 13. Jesus says, “By this they will know you are My disciples, if you have love for one another”. When Christian love is visible, it becomes a testimony. It stands out in a world that is often harsh, divided, and quick to cancel. People may argue with our beliefs, but it’s much harder to ignore a life marked by genuine Christlike love. The world notices when believers love well.
