The Tower of Babel

Today our kids studied the story of the tower of Babel. It’s a familiar story, but one that we
probably don’t think about very often. In it, the people decide to build a great city and in the
middle of that city they begin to build a tower to Heaven. They say to themselves in verse four of
chapter 11 “Come let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose tope is in the heavens; let us
make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole Earth.” Their
wish was to “make a name for themselves”. They wanted all of the recognition for their
accomplishments. When God saw what they were doing, He was displeased because they had
become arrogant and prideful. They were not willing to give God the glory for what they had
achieved. So, God confused their languages and scattered them throughout the whole earth. This
was exactly what they had hoped would not happen but because of their arrogance they were
forced to disperse. There is nothing inherently wrong with ambition and seeking great
accomplishments. However, when we fail to give God the glory for what He has helped us do or
if we become arrogant thinking that we don’t need God’s help, then we displease God and
dishonor our accomplishments. I pray that we will always give God the glory for everything we
do! As always, remember you are loved!
